Directions of development, new attractions and ideas that can strengthen the potential of the seaside town

Mielno has for years attracted tourists with its wide beach, promenade and proximity to nature. It is one of the most recognisable towns on the Baltic Sea, visited every season by thousands of people from all over Poland. At the same time, like every dynamically developing tourist town, Mielno faces challenges and opportunities for further development. In this article we present our ideas for what is worth changing and which directions of development could further strengthen the attractiveness of the town – both in the summer season and outside of it.

Mielno has for years been one of the most recognisable resorts on the Baltic Sea. Wide beach, Lake Jamno, Friendship Promenade, fishing atmosphere of Unieście and the characteristic Walrus Monument – all this means that thousands of tourists come here every season. Mielno offers a multitude of attractions, and one of the biggest attractions are sunsets over the Baltic Sea.

But does this mean that nothing can be improved? Quite the opposite. Since Mielno is an ideal resort both for families with children and for people looking for relaxation, it is worth considering what its future may look like. Here are our ideas for the development of the town and tourist attractions of Mielno.

Mielno – attractions that already work

Before we move on to changes, it is worth emphasising that Mielno is not just the beach. It is also:

  • The Friendship Promenade stretching along the coast,
  • Forest Loop of Adventures and Mysteries,
  • Lake Jamno with marinas and cruises,
  • Walrus Monument and Walrus Trail,
  • water attractions in Mielno,
  • Cruises from the Mila marina,
  • R10 cycling routes towards Unieście,
  • Lighthouse in Gąski,
  • Beautiful beaches.

All this creates an attractive tourist landscape. Mielno certainly has the potential to be one of the best-organised seaside resorts in Poland. However, in order to make Mielno exceptional not only seasonally, several bold decisions are needed.

Here are some of our ideas

More greenery and common space outside the beach

The beach is Mielno’s calling card. The Baltic Sea and the wide coast attract tourists from all over Poland. But outside of season and on days when the weather does not favour sea bathing, there is a lack of more green public spaces.

The proposal?

  • expansion of city parks,
  • more trees and natural relaxation zones,
  • public, free summer pool,
  • picnic zones by Lake Jamno.

A seaside resort should offer more than just entry to the beach. Greenery improves the quality of life for residents and tourists. It is also an element of modern, sustainable development.

Lake Jamno – tourist diamond of the town

Lake Jamno is a huge asset of Mielno. Picturesque body of water, marinas, cruises, water sports. And yet many people draw attention to the state of its cleanliness.

If Mielno has started to promote itself as a town between the sea and the lake, it is necessary to take real care of Jamno. Cleaning the body of water, improving water quality and investing in the infrastructure around the lake are the key to creating an even stronger tourist brand.

Jamno can become a tourist attraction comparable to the beach – a place for walks, recreation and active rest both for families and for water sports enthusiasts.

Canal connecting the lake with the Baltic Sea – a project worth finishing

One of the most ambitious ideas is the completion of the project of the canal connecting Lake Jamno with the Baltic Sea. Such a water route would enable vessels to sail out to sea.

This is not only an interesting attraction, but a real strengthening of Mielno’s position as a sailing and tourism centre. Imagine:

  • a cruise from the lake straight to the sea,
  • development of marinas and water infrastructure,
  • new sailing events,
  • greater cooperation with Koszalin.

It is an investment in the future that could attract a completely new group of tourists.

Year-round water transport

Mielno is a seasonal town. But does it have to be?

Year-round water transport on Lake Jamno – also outside the summer season – would be not only an attraction, but also a practical transport solution. Water connections between Mielno, Unieście and Koszalin could become the calling card of the region.

It is an ecological, effective and modern solution.

Integration programme – a great idea worth developing

In Mielno there is an integration programme with daily activities at set times. It is an excellent idea – joint exercises, animations, sports events or attractions for children.

The problem? Reach.

This project deserves more promotion. It should be visible:

  • on the official channels of the town,
  • on the promenade,
  • in hotels and guesthouses,
  • in social media.

It could be one of the most interesting attractions in Mielno, especially for families with children.

End of stalls disfiguring the landscape

One of the most controversial topics is the aesthetics of the centre. The Friendship Promenade and the pedestrian street in Mielno are in season overgrown with stalls with random architecture – hot dog, potato on a stick, kebab, plastic signs.

Small entrepreneurship is important, but it is worth introducing clear aesthetic standards. A seaside resort on the Baltic should care about architectural coherence.

A ban on conducting business in random “stalls” and the introduction of a uniform visual concept would raise the prestige of the town.

Let’s support venues with atmosphere – which are worth seeing

Fortunately, in Mielno there are places that create atmosphere and are worth visiting:

Such venues build the identity of the town. It is worth supporting them and promoting them as an element of Mielno’s tourist attractions. It is an ideal place to spend time.

Mielno is much more than seasonal fast food. It is also quality, atmosphere and taste.

Coherent architecture – an end to random development

New investments should fit into the seaside and fishing character of the region. Mielno has begun to develop dynamically, but the lack of architectural coherence may in the future negatively affect the image of the town.

The introduction of rules regarding the appearance of new buildings will allow the preservation of the town’s atmosphere and make Mielno a more elegant resort.

The fight for a pier on the sea

A pier on the Baltic is a symbol of many seaside towns. Mielno, despite its enormous potential, still does not have one.

The pier could become:

  • a new tourist attraction,
  • a place for walks,
  • a viewpoint,
  • the calling card of the town.

Sunsets watched from a pier over the Baltic Sea is an image that could become an icon of Mielno.

Summary – the Mielno of the future

Mielno is a place that many of us associate with holidays, relaxation, a beautiful beach and a place of numerous attractions. It is a resort with history, fishing traditions and an exceptional location between the Baltic Sea and Lake Jamno.

But development should not stop at what already exists.

More greenery, a clean lake, coherent architecture, a pier, water transport and the promotion of local initiatives – these are the directions that can make Mielno an even more attractive place to live and rest.

Because although Mielno is the ideal point for holidays, it can also become a model of a modern, well-designed seaside town, which is why it is certainly worth starting the effort for a better tomorrow.
