The Lighthouse in Gąski is one of the most recognisable structures on the central Baltic coast and, at the same time, one of the most interesting viewpoints in the vicinity of Mielno. Built at the turn of 1877–1878, it has been performing a navigational function for over 140 years and today is also a popular tourist attraction open to visitors.
History and architecture of the lighthouse
The construction of the lighthouse was completed in the winter of 1878. The structure rests on a massive, octagonal base with a diameter of 11.3 metres, from which a slender tower rises to a height of 50.2 metres — it is the second tallest lighthouse in Poland. Initially, the light source was a paraffin lamp. In 1927, electric lighting was installed, and after the Second World War the lighthouse was re-commissioned in 1948. The entire complex — including the tower, the lighthouse keepers’ house, the outbuildings and the surrounding wall — has been entered into the register of monuments.
Viewing terrace — Baltic panorama from 50 metres
The 190 winding granite steps lead to the top. The ascent requires good fitness, but the effort is rewarded with a view that is hard to forget. The viewing terrace offers a panorama over the Baltic Sea, and on clear days you can see Sarbinowo, Chłopy, Mielno and Unieście. It is an excellent viewing point near Mielno for both photography enthusiasts and families looking for attractions away from the beach.
Practical information
The lighthouse is open to visitors all year round. In the summer season (May–October) the facility is open daily from 10:00–18:00, and in peak season (July–August) — from 10:00 until sunset with a break from 13:30–15:00. Outside the season, it is worth arranging a visit by phone with the lighthouse keeper. Tickets cost approximately 8 PLN (standard) and 6 PLN (reduced).
Gąski is located approximately 13 km from the centre of Mielno — by car the journey takes about 20 minutes. There is a car park at the lighthouse, paid in season. For active tourists, an interesting alternative is to arrive on foot along the coast, which can be combined with one of the routes described on the page about walking and cycling trails.
Who it is worth visiting for
The lighthouse in Gąski is an attraction that works well both as a family trip destination and as a stop for cyclists exploring coastal routes. Photographers will appreciate the panorama from the top, and history enthusiasts — the over hundred-year-old walls and the atmosphere of an authentic lighthouse complex. On the way back to Mielno, it is worth stopping at the promenade in Sarbinowo, which is on the return route and offers a quiet walk right by the seashore.
