Jet ski in Mielno
everything you need to know before your first ride on Lake Jamno
The jet ski is one of the most frequently chosen holiday attractions on Lake Jamno. Before you set off, however, it is worth knowing a few things: whether you need a licence, what rules apply on the water body, how much rental costs and what to do when the jet ski overturns. This article collects all practical information before your first ride – so that you know exactly what to expect before you stand by the water.
Do you need a licence to operate a jet ski?
This question is asked most often before a first ride. The answer depends on age.
Adults (18+) do not need any special licences to hire a jet ski in Mielno. Before setting off, an instructor from Water Fun carries out a safety briefing – it covers the rules of moving on the lake, the operation of the kill cord and basic manoeuvres. For water sports enthusiasts without experience, this is completely sufficient.
The situation is different in the case of minors. According to Polish law, possession of a motorboat helmsman’s licence is required for persons who want to independently operate a jet ski before reaching 18 years of age. The motorboat helmsman’s licence can be applied for by persons who have reached 14 years of age – this requires passing a theoretical and practical exam. The motorboat helmsman’s licence entitles the holder to operate motorboats on inland waters and on sea waters in a zone up to 2 nautical miles from the shore, during daytime. Persons under 16 with a licence may operate craft with limited engine power up to 60 kW (approx. 81 HP).
At Water Fun Mielno an additional restriction applies: a minor, even with a licence, cannot set off on a jet ski alone. The only option is a two-person ride together with an adult.
Hiring a jet ski at Water Fun Mielno – how does it look step by step?
Water Fun Mielno is the largest rental on the coast, operating at ul. Bolesława Chrobrego 23 (76-032 Mielno), has three points on this lake, right by Lake Jamno. The location by the water itself shortens the journey from registration to the water to a few minutes. The season runs from May to October, the rental is open from 10:00 to 20:00. A reservation can be made online or directly on the spot.
Before entering the water, the customer signs a document in which they take responsibility for themselves and the equipment entrusted to them. A deposit is not taken, however in the event of damage to the jet ski the customer bears the repair costs. Complete equipment – life vests, kill cords, briefing – is waiting on the spot. You do not need to bring anything with you.
Safety rules on the water and rules on Lake Jamno
Safety on the water begins with knowledge of the rules applicable on the specific water body. The rental staff show the departure route before the start – the harbour area is a no-wake zone, so you set off and return very slowly. On Lake Jamno in Mielno an absolute prohibition applies on approaching other craft – including other jet skis, motorboats and the Mila boat.
The driver of the jet ski and the passengers must wear life vests at all times. You control the duration of the ride yourself – each jet ski has a clock. Exceeding the paid time means an additional charge, so watching the time is among the customer’s duties. You pay and sign the documents before setting off.
Capsizing on a jet ski – what to do?
Capsizing during a ride is not a disaster. Mechanically powered jet skis are designed with such situations in mind, and it is a standard part of water sports. Each jet ski is equipped with a so-called kill cord – a safety lanyard attached to the operator’s wrist. At the moment of falling off, the kill cord automatically cuts off the power and the engine goes out.
After falling off, you swim to the jet ski and climb on only from the stern (back) side. Then you reconnect the kill cord and can continue the ride. If the jet ski has turned upside down, you swim from behind and turn it according to the instructions shown by the staff before setting off. Operating a jet ski after capsizing is possible without problems – the equipment does not require servicing after a standard capsize.
What jet skis are available and how much does rental cost?
Water Fun Mielno has a fleet of 8 jet skis in two categories: smaller Sea-Doo Spark (60–90 HP) and larger Yamahas. The engine power and the character of the ride differ markedly – the small jet ski is more manoeuvrable and gives more fun in manoeuvres, the large one reaches higher speeds of up to 90 km/h and works in dynamic riding. The Sea-Doo accelerates to 70 km/h – enough to feel the adrenaline on the first ride. For water-sensation lovers looking for maximum speed – the Yamaha.
