The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Sarbinowo is a historic temple with a rich history dating back to the 13th century. The building in its current Neo-Gothic form was built in 1856–1857 and is one of the more valuable religious monuments in the area of Mielno.
History and architecture of the church in Sarbinowo
The original temple at this place was founded by the Knights Templar in the 13th century. In the following centuries, the object passed into the hands of the Hospitallers, and in the 16th century it was converted into a Protestant church. In 1758, the building suffered serious damage during the Battle of Sarbinowo (Zorndorf). The current church was built of brick in Neo-Gothic style according to a design inspired by the works of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. A characteristic element is an octagonal tower about 40 metres high, placed asymmetrically on the side of the nave — which gives the building an expressive, recognisable profile.
Inside, a wooden main altar from the 19th century, a Neo-Gothic baptismal font, Baroque candlesticks and fragments of original coloured stained-glass windows have been preserved. The church is listed in the monument register under number 1218.
