The Hortulus Gardens Dobrzyca are one of the most extensive complexes of show gardens on the Polish coast. Over an area of more than 5 hectares, 28 themed gardens are presented, gathering over 6,000 species and varieties of plants — including exotic and unique species that can be cultivated thanks to the mild, seaside climate of the region.

Themed gardens near Mielno — what is worth seeing

Each of the gardens represents a different style or type of natural environment. Among the most interesting spaces, the Japanese garden stands out with its characteristic bridges and pagodas, the extensive rock garden and the aromatic herb gardens. Flower lovers will appreciate the rose garden in the English style, and those seeking tranquillity — the water gardens inspired by the work of Antoni Gaudí.

The themes of the gardens also include sense gardens — from the garden of purple and fire, through gardens of grasses and rustling, to spaces designed around smell and touch. The whole forms a coherent, colourful composition that changes its character with the seasons. In spring, the gardens fill with thousands of tulips and daffodils, in summer flowering perennials and roses dominate.

Getting there and visiting

The Hortulus Gardens are located in Dobrzyca, in the Będzino commune — about 19 km from the centre of Mielno. The drive takes about 20–25 minutes via roads No. 165 and 11. The tour lasts on average an hour, although garden enthusiasts can spend much more time here. The gardens are open daily in season — from 9:30 on weekdays and from 10:00 on Sundays [hours may vary by season].

It is worth knowing that, due to narrow, stony paths, the gardens are not accessible for prams or wheelchairs.

Who is it for

A trip to the Hortulus Gardens is primarily a proposal for couples, families with older children and nature enthusiasts. It is also an excellent idea for half a day away from the beach — especially in spring and early summer, when the gardens present themselves most spectacularly. Lovers of the Arboretum in Karnieszewice will find here a related, though completely different, experience of contact with nature.
