The Fishing Harbour in Chłopy is one of the last places on the Polish coast where traditional fishing still forms a living part of everyday life. This small fishing village, located just 5 km west of Mielno, has retained the authentic character of a coastal settlement — with colourful cutters moored straight on the beach and the smell of freshly smoked fish hovering in the air.
A fishing village with centuries-old history
Chłopy is a place with roots reaching back to the 13th century, when the Slavic settlement of Borowo existed here. The village received its present name in 1948. It is the only fishing settlement on this section of coast entered in full into the register of monuments — it has retained the traditional spatial layout and half-timbered buildings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. White facades, wooden frames and thatched roofs create a landscape that is hard to find in other seaside resorts.
On the beach at ul. Portowa, several fishing boats of 8 to 12 metres in length are moored. The fishermen go out to sea early in the morning, and after returning sell the fresh catch directly from the cutters. It is an experience that lets you feel the rhythm of life of a coastal settlement from decades ago.
Fish fry shops and local cuisine
Right by the harbour there are fry shops and smokehouses offering fish straight from the Baltic Sea. Flounder, cod or herring reach the plate within a few hours of being caught — it is hard to find fresher fish along the entire coast. For those interested, local fishermen also organise fishing trips, during which you can try your own luck with a rod at sea.
Who is the harbour in Chłopy for
The Fishing Harbour in Chłopy is a place for everyone looking for a calmer alternative to crowded resorts. Families with children will appreciate the opportunity to observe the cutters and get to know the work of fishermen. Photography enthusiasts will find dozens of shots here — from colourful boats to historic half-timbered houses. It is worth combining the visit with Skarbnica Wioski Rybackiej, which tells the history of the place, and a walk to the nearby Obelisk of the 16th Meridian.
You can reach Chłopy from Mielno by car in a few minutes or on foot via a forest walking and cycling route. The harbour is accessible free of charge all year round — although it has its greatest charm in summer, when the cutters return from fishing and the fry shops serve fish in the open air.
