Chełmska Mountain is one of the most important pilgrimage and tourist places in the area of Koszalin. The hill located in the south of the city combines spiritual, historical and landscape values — and from Mielno you can get here by car in about 20 minutes.
Sanctuary and history of Chełmska Mountain
On top of the mountain there is the Sanctuary of Our Lady Thrice Admirable, consecrated on 1 June 1991 during the visit of Pope John Paul II to Koszalin. However, the place of religious worship has a much longer tradition here — the foundations of the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the hill are dated to the 12th–13th century. Chełmska Mountain has attracted pilgrims for centuries and is one of the oldest Marian centres in West Pomerania.
Observation tower with panorama
The main tourist attraction is the 31.5-metre observation tower, built in 1988. After climbing 140 steps, a panorama of Koszalin, Lake Jamno, Bukowo Lake and, in good visibility, the Baltic Sea stretches from the terrace. The tower is open from April to October, daily from 11:00 to 19:00 (with a break from 13:00 to 13:30 on weekdays).
Trails and surroundings
Around Chełmska Mountain run several walking and cycling trails, which lead through forests and areas of rich nature. On the hill there is also a Calvary with fifteen Stations of the Cross — a route about 1.5 km long, ideal for a quiet walk.
Who is it for
Chełmska Mountain is a half-day trip that combines outdoor activity with views and history. It is suitable for families with children, couples, as well as older people. It is worth combining the visit with sightseeing of the Museum in Koszalin, which is located on the way back to Mielno.
